Global scale development centre for human brain mapping will be established in Tallinn

04.05.2012

Estonian and German entrepreneurs and scientists establish in Estonia a unique development centre that will engage in developing a web-based platform of three-dimensional model of human brain, which will be used globally as a working tool in branches of medicine of neurosurgery, neurology and radiology. Prof.Dr. J.K Mai from the Heinrich-Heine University in Dusseldorf, who has mapped human brain most precisely in the world for today, participates in the project. The platform being created will bear the name ON.TOP2 (Online topography and topometry of human brain).

Entrepreneurs Miroslaw Pienkowski and Andro Kullerkupp and Prof.Dr. J.K.Mai are the initiators in establishing the development centre for human brain mapping in Tallinn. Tallinn has been chosen for establishing the centre for several reasons. The project requires high-quality and secure server hosting and top-class connection with the world that are existent in Tallinn. The regulation and business environment in Estonia is flexible and not over regulated as well as the high-tech reputation of Estonia is also not irrelevant. As for the necessary competence it does not matter where the development centre is situated, as the specialists are involved internationally not according to their location but their competence.

Prof.Dr. J.K. Mai has mapped as a result of decades-long research work the most perfect model of human brain so far, that is called the atlas of human brain. The 3D atlas available on web-site www.thehumanbrain.info has been already created. The goal of the development centre team is to use the existing atlas as the starting-point in creating the web-based platform of global self-developing atlas. In the future every medical establishment, where is used the MRI scan, will use also the ON.TOP2 platform. Thus all the users of the atlas will participate in its perfection. The result of every scan is reflected in the atlas. All the users of the platform can be sure that the most perfect atlas of human brain is always at their disposal.

When comparing the atlas to diagnoses will shape out patterns on the basis of which is possible to give estimates in very early stage about the risk of forming Alzheimer`s or Parkinson`s disease or cancers. Neurosurgeons can determine with the help of the atlas the coordinates of brain core simulation substantially more precisely in case of every patient individually, as similarly to all the other human organs of every person also the brain is a bit different. Such individual approach raises the success rate of procedures for sure.

The access of medical establishments to the ON.TOP2platform will be as simple as possible. Considering the scope effect, the use of platform is rather advantageous. This favours the quick taking into use of the platform in a medical estalishment and that in its turn increases its value. Proceeding from that the platform will become after every passing minute the most perfect atlas of human brain in the world. In some countries law requires the use of most modern technology in the medicine and this necessitates, so to speak, the compulsory use of the platform.

It is necessary to coordinate a big international network and make significant investments for creating the ON.TOP2 platform. Human lives will depend on the reliability of the platform.
